Spain

Spanish Onion box loading for storage
Interveg Spanish Onions are grown in the fertile valley of the river
Ebro in the provinces of Navarra and Zaragoza. Winters are fairly mild,
with summers having lower temperatures than Albacete & Toledo, where the
majority of storage onions are produced. This enables production of
onions which have better storage potential.
In addition the
mighty river Ebro flowing through the valley ensures a constant supply
of irrigation water, which is by no means secure in other parts of
Spain.
Production of Red Onions for sale in July and August is a
recent development and Interveg have just completed its third season.
The product offers a cost effective alternative to New Zealand,
Tasmanian, and Italian supplies to bridge the gap between UK Seasons.

Red Onion variety trials Spain
The Sweet Onion market in the UK is currently a very small one.
However, this offers scope for significant increase through provision of
more consistently mild flavoured and cost effective offer. Trials have
been underway for the past 2 years in Spain to achieve this goal.
Interveg are working with a specialist Sweet Onion grower in Aragon who
grows nothing else.
