Egyptian Red Onions a week before harvest

Egyptian Onion irrigation on the edge of the desert
This is a particularly good example of recent innovation by Interveg building on a supply started in 2006.
Egypt has been producing
vegetables along with rice, wheat and other agricultural crops since
ancient times in the fertile silt soils created by flooding of the river
Nile in its Delta.
Onions have been exported from this area to
Europe for over 160 years. Large areas of desert have been reclaimed and
substantial irrigation projects installed.
A combination of delta and
sand land is the basis of our contracted supply of low cost Red Onions
available in June and July each year.
Brown Onions are also
available from April to early July.
